Ingredients

4 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

1 cup granulated sugar (divided)

1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup milk

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Prepare the Apples: In a medium bowl, combine the sliced apples with 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1/4 cup of granulated sugar. Sprinkle in a pinch of salt. Toss lightly to coat the apple slices and set aside for about 10-15 minutes to allow them to release their juices.

Make the Caramel Sauce: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the 1/2 cup of unsalted butter. Once melted, add the packed brown sugar and stir continuously until the mixture is fully dissolved and combined. Allow it to bubble for about 2 minutes, then carefully remove it from heat. Evenly pour the caramel sauce into the bottom of a greased 9-inch round cake pan, ensuring it coats the surface.

Arrange the Apples: Neatly layer the cinnamon-coated apple slices over the caramel sauce in the prepared cake pan, ensuring they are evenly distributed. Set aside while you prepare the cake batter.

Mix the Cake Batter: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the remaining 3/4 cup of granulated sugar, 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt until well mixed. In a separate bowl, whisk together the 1/4 cup of milk, 2 large eggs, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until fully combined. Gradually stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined—be careful not to over-mix; a few lumps are okay.

Combine: Gently pour the cake batter over the arranged apples in the pan, using a spatula to evenly spread the batter across the surface.

Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the cake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool and Invert: After baking, allow the cake to cool in the pan for approximately 10 minutes. Carefully run a knife along the edges to loosen the cake. Place a serving plate upside-down on top of the cake pan, and gently invert it to release the cake. If needed, give the pan a gentle shake to help the caramel apple layer come free.

Serve: Let the cake cool slightly before slicing. It can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature. For an extra treat, serve slices topped with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Presentation Tips: Consider garnishing with a sprinkle of cinnamon or a drizzle of caramel sauce over each slice for an elegant finish. Enjoy!
